The Grand Union flag — also known as the Continental Colours — was America's first national flag. It was first hoisted on the warship Alfred in Philadelphia on December 3, 1775, by Lieutenant John Paul Jones.
During the Battle of Nassau on March 3–4, 1776, the Continental Marines raised the Grand Union flag over Fort Nassau — marking the first time American colors were raised on foreign soil. The monument at Pompano Beach is flanked by Grand Union flags in honor of this historic moment.
